～する shelve 《a problem》; put sth to one side [aside, on the shelf]; put [place] on hold; pigeonhole; 《米》 table 《a bill, a motion》 (for further discussion).

●難問題を棚上げする shelve [postpone dealing with] a difficult problem

・負債を棚上げする reschedule a loan; give a debtor a (temporary) reprieve.

●計画は当分棚上げになった. The project has been shelved [《米》 tabled] for the time being.

・北方領土問題はいつまでも棚上げにしておくわけにはいかない. The Northern Territories issue cannot be left on the shelf indefinitely.
